HOMEMADE MOUTHWASH WITH ESSENTIAL OILS

Using a mouthwash can not only freshen your breath but also help kill bacteria. This mouthwash recipe with essential oils is a great way to do that without the harsh sting of traditional mouthwash.  You can make a batch of this mouthwash in just a few moments and it costs just pennies to make.

The basic ingredients in traditional mouthwash are water, alcohol, cleansing ingredients, flavoring, and coloring. It’s the alcohol that gives the sting to most mouthwashes and it isn’t used in this mouthwash recipe with essential oils at all.

You can easily create this mouthwash with just a few simple ingredients:

• Mason jar or glass jar
• Filtered water
• 2 tsp baking soda
• 1 1/2 – 2 tsp Tea tree essential oil
• 1 1/2 – 2 tsp Peppermint essential oil

This mouthwash does more than just mask bad mouth odors. The baking soda or bicarbonate of soda helps balance the levels of acid in your mouth. Baking soda can also discourage the formation of plaque, promote healing of mouth ulcers and sores, and help whiten your teeth.

Tea tree essential oil has antibacterial properties and helps fight infections and kill bacteria. Peppermint essential oil has antimicrobial properties to freshen breath and also gives this mouthwash a cooling feeling.

Making this mouthwash recipe with essential oils is very simple. Place all the ingredients in a Mason jar and shake until they are mixed. Do not make a large batch of this because essential oils may lose their effectiveness when mixed together over time. I store mine in the refrigerator and swish a tablespoon a day in my mouth after brushing. The baking soda will settle to the bottom of the jar so be sure to shake before using.
